[Observation on Teacher]Observing My Mentor's Classroom II

On the first week, I did my classroom observation. The first day of my classroom observation full of excitement and nervousness at the same time. According to the agreement with my mentor Sir Danny O. Balance, I will have my observation at St. Dorothea section in the afternoon. Sir Balance is an English subject teacher and taught at grade 10 only, he is an advisor of the drama club at JHS as well. He is very kind, always put me in the first and asked me which I prefer, do I have something to be bothered when teaching so i can teaching well without any pressure and stressed. He is the best teacher and partner ever! Started at 1.25 pm I walked in St. Dorothea section, grade 10 through the back door. Sir Balance greeted his students and introduced me to them as his partner of teaching. He started his lessons by praying and called the students to lead the prayer. [Summary & Suggestion] My Short Reflection in the Phillipines and UST

PURPOSES OF PRACTICUM The purpose of this programme is to give the students (me) an opportunity to be a student teacher in other country so that I could be a great teacher in the future. I could improve my teaching skills, how to create a meaningful classroom, and how to handle and manage the class. Another purpose of this programme is to have an experience to teach in another country, and of course to prepare ourselves to become a teacher who's not just smart but also intellectual in attitudes. PROCEDURE OF PRACTICUM The procedures that I had done are several tests and orientation. Start from an interview, public speaking, and teaching testing in the campus. After that, I get an orientation in the receiving school, then observing the classroom, doing assistantship, then doing independent teaching. City Tour

Manila has an old style of the building over the city. The city looks old but vintage at the same time. On the forth day in Manila, such a great opportunities to go around the the city. I went to Jose Rizal National Monument which located at land of Luneta. We went to Intramuros Fort Santiago, but before came in, the tour guide stopped in the Handicraft. We were given a shell necklace as a visitor sign and do not put it of until we're out of the store. I bought postcards while it was heavy rain outside. By using an umbrella, we continued our tour walked inside Fort Santiago Proper which is the place where Jose Rizal got killed and heritaged by Spanish. Inside the fortress, there were so many things dedicated to Jose Rizal as a memorial to remind Filipinos about him.

[Teaching Practice]My Independent Teaching in UST JHS

My first experience teaching in academic school was exciting and nervous. I woke up at 5 in the morning, already done praying and all other stuff to be prepared. I took a walk from my dorm to the school, UST JHS where i had to do my teaching practicum. Arrived before 7.15, i prepared my material and presentation in the room that has been prepared for all of the students teacher. I was no longer sitting at the back looking at the students’ back and walked in through the backdoor. When the time has shown 7.15 am, I walked in through the front door of St. Damian section. I stood up in front of them and greeted them. I called one student to lead the prayer. I prepared my presentation but unfortunately it couldn’t connected. My students, as I remembered their name are Jose and Bryan helped me to fix the HDMI cable. Before proceeding to the lesson, I showed my students a motivational video entitled ‘push yourself’. TEACHING METHOD Sir Balance, that is the way I called my mentor who has long name Danny Osboken Balance. He is one of the English teachers in the UST Junior High School. He is an advisor of Drama club in the school. The first impression when I saw him in the classroom was totally different when we discussed out of the class. He is very expressive and uses loud voice when teaching, of course he is an advisor of Drama club. He always focuses on the students' attention. Get the students attention and make all of them see you are very important in teaching, he said. He always asks the student perspective in understanding the material before continuing main lesson material. He always asks the students whether they understand or not, what do they get from the lesson material. He believes that when he asked the students about what is in their mind, that is when the teaching and learning process happened. [Teaching Plan]Curriculum and Lesson Plan in the Phillipines

A few years back curriculum in Indonesia just updated english as one of the main subject to be learned. Unfortunately, even as a main subject in education system, english is not well enough to be taught because the minimum of using it. Indonesian people love our Bahasa as a nation language, unlike English as a foreign language. But, in this millenials era some of youth mix english and bahasa when they speak with their friends as one of their style. I am proud to be one of the students exchange in SEA Teacher Program so that i can know the difference and compare the education system in other country. Fortunately, the country which i exchange in was Phillipines. One of the country where english as a second language instead of foreign language like in Indonesia. The curriculum in the Phillipines use K-12 while in Indonesia use KTSP, but recent 2013 the curriculum has changed become K13.
