[Pedagogical Contents]Observing My Mentor's Classroom I

TEACHING METHOD
Sir Balance, that is the way I called my mentor who has long name Danny Osboken Balance. He is one of the English teachers in the UST Junior High School. He is an advisor of Drama club in the school. The first impression when I saw him in the classroom was totally different when we discussed out of the class. He is very expressive and uses loud voice when teaching, of course he is an advisor of Drama club. He always focuses on the students' attention. Get the students attention and make all of them see you are very important in teaching, he said. He always asks the student perspective in understanding the material before continuing main lesson material. He always asks the students whether they understand or not, what do they get from the lesson material. He believes that when he asked the students about what is in their mind, that is when the teaching and learning process happened.

LEARNING MATERIALS AND INNOVATION
The material in UST Junior High School especially English subject does not available a textbook for students at the tenth grade. They only notetaking and pay attention to the presentation of the teacher has made. But for the rest level they have printed textbooks. One of the books is prentice hall grammar book for grammar.

SOURCES OF LEARNING AND TECHNOLOGY
The teacher uses resources available in the library such as books, e-books, module, etc. and online source to support the material preparation. Sir Balance always uses a laptop to present the material in powerpoint form when delivering the material.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT
When I observed sir Balance, he always makes a formative assessment along the lesson. He orders the students to explain in their own words about some issues or he orders the students to reexplain about some unfamiliar words/sentences in the material. For the summative assessment, he shows some direction and orders the students to do the task in the presentation.
