University of Santo Tomas (UST) Profile

Introduced by a Thomasian, the University of Santo Tomas which known as UST, is the Pontifical, Royal, Catholic University of the Phillipines, is a Dominican institution of learning founded in 1611, under the patronage of St. Thomas Aquinas. The university as the oldest campus in Asia and also in Phillipines. UST is a school/university where i had my exchange program. Being there is a meaningful and best experience ever! 

Mission
The university, in pursuit of truth guided by reason and illmunied by faith, dedicates herself to the generation, advancement, and transmission of knowledge to form competent and compassionate professionals committed to the service of the Church, the nation, and the global community.

Vision
Faithful to her centuries-old tradition of excellence, the University of Santo Tomas, envisions herself as a premier Catholic institution of learning in Asia, committed to the professional and moral formation of her stakeholders for social transformation.

There are 8 Faculties, 9 Colleges, 2 Institutes and 1 Conservatory of Music in UST. My buddy told me that if a college already founded over a hundred years it will be called “Faculty”, but if it’s less than a hundred years it will be stayed called “College”.

TEACHING METHOD Sir Balance, that is the way I called my mentor who has long name Danny Osboken Balance. He is one of the English teachers in the UST Junior High School. He is an advisor of Drama club in the school. The first impression when I saw him in the classroom was totally different when we discussed out of the class. He is very expressive and uses loud voice when teaching, of course he is an advisor of Drama club. He always focuses on the students' attention. Get the students attention and make all of them see you are very important in teaching, he said. He always asks the student perspective in understanding the material before continuing main lesson material. He always asks the students whether they understand or not, what do they get from the lesson material. He believes that when he asked the students about what is in their mind, that is when the teaching and learning process happened. [Observation on Teacher]Observing My Mentor's Classroom II

On the first week, I did my classroom observation. The first day of my classroom observation full of excitement and nervousness at the same time. According to the agreement with my mentor Sir Danny O. Balance, I will have my observation at St. Dorothea section in the afternoon. Sir Balance is an English subject teacher and taught at grade 10 only, he is an advisor of the drama club at JHS as well. He is very kind, always put me in the first and asked me which I prefer, do I have something to be bothered when teaching so i can teaching well without any pressure and stressed. He is the best teacher and partner ever! Started at 1.25 pm I walked in St. Dorothea section, grade 10 through the back door. Sir Balance greeted his students and introduced me to them as his partner of teaching. He started his lessons by praying and called the students to lead the prayer.
